Central desert of Iran (Dasht-e kavir)

Dasht-e Kavir is the largest salted desert in the center of the Iranian plateau. It is also known as Kavire Namak or Great Salt Desert. The desert is located in the southeast of the Alborz Mountains, and covers an area of 800 km (500 mi) by 320 km (200 mi). Therefore, the total surface area of this desert is about 77,600 km2 (30,000 mile2).

Dasht-e Kavir is one of the Iranian deserts with no rain and snow. Moreover, seasonal lakes are created in the desert by the run-off from surrounded mountains. The only plants that are adapted to the hot and arid climate of the desert are species like shrubs, grasses on mountain tops, and Mugwort.

Only a few number of animals can resist the hot and arid climate of this desert, including Persian gazelles which live in parts of steppe and desert areas of the central plateau. Wild sheep, camels, goats, and Persian leopards are common in mountainous areas.

Same as all deserts in the world, the temperature varies significantly in days and nights. The lowest temperature that you could experience in this desert is 22 °C (72 °F) in January, and it could go up to 70 °C (130 °F) in summer.

Lut desert (Dasht-e Lut)

Another desert of Iran is the little desert or Kavir-e Lut. It is also called Dasht-e Lut. The desert is located in the eastern part of Iran and covers an area of 320 km (200 miles) from northwest to southeast and is about 160 km (100 miles) wide with an area of 51,800 km2 (20,000 mile2).

This amazing desert, has two total different sections. The eastern part is a low plateau covered with salt flats, and the central part has been sculpted by the wind into a series of parallel ridges and furrows.

From all deserts in Iran, Kavir-e Lut is the only one that was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. There were two reasons why this desert was subscribed in this list. Firstly, the Lut Desert protects a globally-recognized iconic hot desert landscape, one of the hottest places on earth. Secondly, the property represents an exceptional example of ongoing geological processes related to erosional and depositional features in a hot desert.
